Sculptor, Builder, and Maker
Paper pulp is the primary sculptural medium for artwork constructed by John Babcock using traditional methods and unique techniques developed for this individual papermaking process.

I am constantly learning from the pulp. I pour, cast, inlay, and collage the various pigmented pulps in separately made batches, contrasting these different papermaking fibers of cotton, kozo, and abaca.

Each type of fiber reflects light differently when dry, and I use this unique characteristic of paper fiber to create a dynamic within the piece and, thus, an emotional response.

My goal is for the work to have an emotional presence. I select a color palette to set the tone and then use gestural imagery with contrasting pulp to expand the story.
